At Karlstad Student Union we meet different people every day, out of the slightly more than 10 000 students that study a course at Karlstad University. The one thing they all have in common, is that they want their time of study to be of great value.
The courses shall be of high quality and they shall be proud of their education. They want to be able to perceive and understand the idea behind the content of the course. They also want to understand the relevance of the literature used for reading and examination in different ways.
We look after the quality of the education
We works on a daily basis to look after the quality of the courses. On one hand we take direct care of students when something goes wrong, and on the other hand we look after the educational system at different levels. Student representatives participating in different bodies at the university are of great help for us.
Rights and obligations
Karlstad University is the student's place of work and just like in working life there are both rights and obligations for each individual. It is important that you know the rules and conditions concerning your studies. You can make demands only when you know your rights in relation to your obligations!
As a student at Karlstad University there are some fundamental conditions the university has to fulfill for you.
- Syllabil and education plans shall be available at least one month before the last application date.
- A literature list shall be available one month before the beginning of the course.
- A schedule for a 10 week study period shall be available at least two weeks before the beginning of the course.
- The results from exams shall be delivered within three working weeks.
- It's not possible to appeal the results of an examination. You do have the right to a review when there has been an obvious incorrect decision.
- You have the right to receive some form of feedback on your examination result, for instance an exam template, a comment or a review.
Read the syllabus
There is a specific content stated in a syllabus for each course. It's important that you read this. Ask the lecturer to go through the plan so that you can talk about it.
This shall be included in a syllabus:
- course designation
- course credits and specialization level according to the examination requirements
- aim of the course
- main content of the course
- course literature and other teaching material to be used
- knowledge requirements and other necessary conditions for admission to the course
- grading scales to be used
- if the course is divided in parts
Right to study counseling
The students always have the right to study counseling. The university also offers different support actions to those who need extra support with their studies. At the Student Centre (Studentcentrum) you can get help with study counseling and almost anything else.
Compulsory lectures
Lectures can be optional or compulsory. There can be some compulsory elements if it's necessary for the achievement of the aims of the course. All of the compulsory elements shall be notified to the students during the introduction of the course and shall be stated in the syllabus and the schedule. Whenever there is a compulsory element it's considered part of the examination. If a compulsory element needs to be rescheduled the students shall be notified in good time.
All courses shall be evaluated
All courses and educational programs shall be evaluated. This is also valid for guidance given in the frames of essay courses. Summaries of prior evaluations shall be available. During the introduction of a course, the lecturer shall inform about possible changes arisen from prior course evaluations.
Cheating is not allowed
You cannot cheat. Cheating means using illicit aids at any form of examination during the studies. It can be plagiarism of someone else's texts, asking for help from others during unsupervised examination etc. If someone discovers this abuse you don't have the right to a new examination and the cheating will be reported to the rector. The rector will decide whether the case shall be brought up at the University's Disciplinary Board or not.
Equal treatment
Equal treatment means that all people are treated equally. This means that action shall be taken against all types of discrimination, at the same time as equality shall be encouraged. The purpose of equal treatment is to prevent all kind of discrimination.
